Robert Johns has written extensively on Human Rights, Law for Social Workers and considered the ethical challenges in decision making in practice. His texts are essential reading for Social Work students on the Law and Social Policy Unit at BU and we are inviting students, practitioners and academics to come together to learn, reflect and discuss on World Social Work Day 16.03.2021 10am-12noon.

Commenting on the human rights implications of restrictions on people’s lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Equality and Human Rights Commission Chief Executive, Rebecca Hilsenrath, said on 22 September 2020:

We are walking a tightrope. We need to find the balance between saving lives from coronavirus, and allowing people the hard won freedoms that are the framework for those lives – such as a right to a private and family life, to freedom of assembly, and to an education. … At the same time, we must protect those many other lives which will be put at risk without access to appropriate health and social care, such as older and disabled people, patients with cancer or with mental health challenges – or risked through the rising rates of domestic violence. 

This Webinar will focus on this balance applied to social work. It will be in four parts:

1. A summary of what is legally allowable in human rights law in terms of temporarily suspending the European Conventions Rights
2. Human rights law and social work law relating to children
3. Human rights law and social work law relating to adult care services
4. Human rights law and social work law relating to mental health and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

Each section will include an overview of the law and will be followed by opportunities for questions.

This masterclass will be run via Microsoft Teams.
